What Is a Pattern and When to Use It When Importing Flooring Materials


What is a pattern

A pattern is a ready-to-use texture assembled from individual elements (planks, tiles, etc.) that repeats across a surface during visualization.

In simple terms:

plank = one element of the flooring

pattern = a repeating fragment of the surface

Why a pattern is used

A pattern is required when you need to:

  • display complex layouts (double herringbone, modular layouts, etc.)
    The system automatically generates only classic herringbone and 45° chevron layouts.
    Double herringbone, 60° chevron, and other non-standard angles require a pattern texture.

  • preserve the manufacturer’s original layout

  • avoid automatically generated random layouts

  • use planks of different lengths within a single layout
    If one product includes planks of multiple sizes (for example: 0.12×0.4, 0.12×0.6, 0.12×1.2), standard layout generation is not possible — a ready pattern must be used instead.


Two ways to import flooring materials

The system automatically determines how to visualize a material based on how the import fields are filled. There are two main approaches:

Option 1. Importing individual planks (layout generated automatically)

When to use:
You have separate plank or tile images that should be used to generate the flooring layout.

How to fill the fields

product_image: Specify plank image names separated by commas (img_1, img_2, img_3):

  • product_width, product_length: Specify the size of a single plank (in meters).

  • pattern_width, pattern_length: Leave these fields empty. These fields are intended only for ready-made pattern textures. If you fill them in, the system switches to pattern mode and ignores plank images, layouts, and seams.

  • layouts: Layout type. You may leave this empty. In this case, the following layouts will be generated automatically 1_2_offset, 1_3_offset, random_offset or you may specify layouts manually.

  • edge_selection: Controls seam visibility between elements (yes / no). Optional. Default value = yes

  • edge_color: Defines seam color in RGB format. If empty, the seam color is calculated automatically from the average texture color.

Option 2. Importing a ready-made pattern

Used when a prepared flooring pattern texture is available.

For example:

  • decorative or complex layouts

  • manufacturer-specific layouts

  • layouts using planks of different lengths

How to fill the fields:

  • product_image: Specify a single pattern texture file.

  • product_width, product_length: Specify the size of one plank (in meters).

  • pattern_width, pattern_length: Specify the physical size of the repeating pattern block in meters. If these fields are filled the system ignores layouts, edge_selection, edge_color, because the layout is taken directly from the pattern image.

What happens if multiple images and pattern size are specified together

If multiple files are specified in product_image and at the same time pattern_width
pattern_length are filled in, the system uses only the first image, and the rest are ignored.

 

Why product_width and product_length are still required when importing a pattern

Even when importing a ready-made pattern, the fields product_width, product_length remain required. They are used in the product card (to display plank dimensions), but they do not affect visualization. Visualization scale depends only on pattern_width, pattern_length

If you are using a ready-made pattern, the next important step is to define its physical size correctly. The values of pattern_width and pattern_length directly determine the scale of the flooring in the visualization.
